Assassin of Truths by Brenda Drake

This was a very anticipated book for me. I had been waiting for it since reading book number two shortly after it had come out February 2017. This is the final book in the Library Jumpers series and these are my thoughts.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

This book was a little hard for me to get into at first. For some reason I felt as if it had been much longer since the release of book two and honestly it had only been, like, six months. With everything that had happened in book two, though, I was very much ready for the story to continue. I wanted to know if Gia stayed with Bastien or go back to Arik. I wanted to know more about Royston and what was going to happen with Nick. This third book, however, focused a lot on Gia.

Now, I get it. Gia is the main character and it should most definitely revolve around her. And I don't know if it's because I've been reading books with multiple points of view that help give me more perspective into the story, but this book fell a little flat for me and this is why.

Reason number 1: Gia's character changed and not for the better in my opinion. In books one and two she was a total bada**. She took things in stride in order to get done what needed to be done. She learned to fight and she went into battle no problem and then it's like, she gets trapped in this dimension with Bastien and they fall for each other and suddenly she's kind of a wuss. I mean not a total wuss, she's a savior type character so she has to keep some of her fight, but she just isn't the same when she gets out and book three starts. I know that her character was going to change because of the things that happen and because she loses friends and family and that kind of loss is very hard, but some of her mannerisms during these times to me were just not believable. Her mind set seems to change too much too fast.

Reason number 2: I absolutely hate what Arik has become. I understand that Arik's going to hold some bitterness towards Gia because she chose Bastien, but to not believe her and put her in prison and then get mad because she gets all beat up... I feel like his loyalty was all towards Gia and her cause until this third book. He was all about making sure Gia fulfilled her purpose to destroy the Tetrad until this book. Suddenly his character's loyalty is with the people fighting against her? Didn't really sit well with me.

Reason number three: This book had way too much going on. I know this was always meant to be a trilogy, but I don't know, this book went by way too quickly and I felt that there was just too much going on. Too many places to remember and too many new people. I kind of wish she had started some of this in the second book and then finished it in the third or maybe she should have spread it out and added another book. I just felt that there was too much going on. I understand the addition of the new characters and I get that she had to take Gia to these places, but it was just way too much. Gia and her gang were always on the move, I felt that the details of some of the places they went suffered because they were there for such a short amount of time, and I felt that areas that should have been slower were way too fast and it sometimes got confusing.

Now, that being said, I did not hate this book by any means. I actually really enjoyed it and I was happy with some of the outcomes. I was more of a fan of Bastien, so Gia ending up with him made me happy. I enjoyed their romance more than Gia and Arik's at the beginning of the series. I know that is an unpopular opinion with a lot of people, but there it is. I also really liked Emily's character even though she was on the bad guy side in book two because she was possessed by an evil spirit, I thought her character redeemed itself in book three. And I enjoyed seeing Gia's grandmother getting into the action a little more. Her powers as a witch were played out a little more and I enjoyed learning a little more about her character.

So, that is it for this review. If you enjoyed this review stay tuned for more every Tuesday. Also, go ahead and leave a comment if you have any suggestions for books or authors as I am always looking for different things to read 😁
