Allright... So, a coworker of mine recommended that I read the House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin Craig and seriously... SO GOOD!
The story is a take on the 12 dancing princesses, which is already a creepy fairy tale if truth be told. This take on the story, though takes the creep factor to a whole new level!
A few things I absolutely loved about this book:
The elaborate polytheistic religion- each aspect of the land is covered by a different god/goddess which makes this book seem so much more magical. Similar to the Greek and Roman mythologies, the gods interact with humans and meddle in their lives to make for interesting happenings.
The family dynamic- The sisters are all very close and, despite the fact that their father has (had) twelve daughters, the girls are doted upon and love is shown to all of them. The father, in fact, is very much like King Triton from the Little Mermaid in my opinion. You can see the parallels not only in the way he treats his daughters, but also the similarities in the world they live in. This book is set on the seaside and the people on the islands pay more attention to the god of the sea than the others.
Verity (the youngest sister) as the creepy little girl- every creep movie has one and Verity was definitely it in this story.
A few things I didn’t completely care for (contains spoilery information):
The obvious choice for the ‘curse’ was the step mother- I had this itching thought in the back of my head that she was somehow involve throughout the whole book.
The romance between Cassius and Annaleigh- I feel that it was too fast. He made her hot, I get it, but I feel that in the span of like a month and three interactions with each other, they were professing their undying love for each other and to me that seemed a little too much.
I was disappointed that the best friend Fisher was dead from the very beginning. I actually liked his character until I found out he was being used by the goddess of nightmares and insanity. I do have to mention that I wasn’t as sad as I probably should have been. With Fisher dead, that meant there was no love triangle... which drive me crazy in books.
Over all this book was really good. I read it in about two days and, towards the, middle had trouble putting it down. So, applause for Erin Craig! Can’t wait to see what else she comes up with!
