Monsters of Verity by Victoria Schwab

So, I recently read the Monsters of Verity series by Victoria Schwab and decided to do a little review about the books. The first book was called This Savage Song. When I first started reading this book I wasn't really sure how I felt about it and to be honest, even though I've finished both books I'm still not sure how I feel about them and here's why.

When I first met the main characters, Kate and August, I felt sympathy for the situations they were in. August was a monster who just wanted to be human and Kate was a human who just wanted her father's love and acceptance. Throughout the whole of the first book you see them struggle with their realities and get thrown together to help each other with the problems they were each facing. Honestly, I felt like this was any other YA book written by any other YA author with the added benefit of monsters and a new twist on a Dystopian future. The way each type of monster killed was interesting and was probably the only thing that was truly unique about the books.

In the second book, Our Dark Duet, I think August was my favorite. Kate was just annoying. Her journey had turned into one that revolved around vengeance. Her character changed so drastically from the first book to the next that I really didn't feel like she was even the same person. I didn't think her character had evolved in a realistic manner compared to August's character. The book really had a forced feel. The author wanted certain things to happen and instead of allowing it to happen naturally it seemed forced.

You may wonder why, to me, the development of characters is so important. It's because when I read a book I immerse myself into that characters life. Based on the description of them that I'm given I imagine them in my mind and completely let them take over. I look through their eyes at the situations they are face with and if I can't find the way they react believable based on what I've been given by the author, I can't get into the book.

So that's my take on the Monsters of Verity series by Victoria Schwab. I gave it a 3 out of 5 stars rating on Goodreads. I will link the Goodreads page below so you can decide for yourself if you'd like to read it and maybe check out some other reviews!
