Oh My goodness! It has been way too long since I have done one of these.
I know that I have done a video talking about these two books,
But, I wanted to talk a little more in depth about them. I tried to just skim the surface in my video so that way if someone wanted to watch it but they haven't read the book yet, they could. That is not the case with this, though. I am going to be heavy handed with the spoilers here so.. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
I honestly loved the first book, which was Strange the Dreamer. I loved getting to know Lazlo. I loved getting to see a character as nerdy as myself. I loved getting to see Weep through his eyes and then his name just cracked me up every time I read it on the page. When we find out that Lazlo himself is a "godspawn" character and, what's more, the one the rest have been waiting for, everything for me clicked. He had been an outsider with everyone else because he really really wasn't like any of them. He was different in a way that no one would have expected.
Honestly, while I liked Sarai's character, she was not my favorite. She seemed a little more generic to me than some of the other characters. While her abilities were unique, I felt that her personality was one that I could find in other books that I have read.
The character that really caught my attention was Minya. Her Peter Pan complex was fascinating to read. She had matured mentally pretty much like the rest of the four "godspawn," but she was physicallystill the six year old girl from 15 years ago when everything happened and Weep became the Unnamed city. It really was unnerving to read the parts where she was doing truly devious things and imagine her as a six year old little girl doing them. My mind kept trying to age her up during those parts because I didn't want to think of a young girl doing them.
The other character I really enjoyed reading was Eril-Fane. He was one of the warriors that came to Lazlo's city to get help for Weep. His story line was another that was interesting to me. He is part of the reason for Minya's craziness, and as a warrior you would think, so what? He feels so incredibly guilty for all of the things he had done to the other godspawn. He killed them all and Minya and the other four were the only ones left as a result. Or at least he thought he did.
Muse of Nightmares really wrapped everything up nicely for that set of characters, but it also left some room in case Taylor decides to add more to the story. Which, honestly, I want to know if they find someone to restore Sarai to a body. I want to know if they find other worlds with godspawn children. I want to find out if Lazlo ever goes back to Weep to stay.
Hopefully, Laini Taylor hears the pleas of her readers and does some sort of book to tell us what happens with Sarai and Lazlo. I at least need something to find out if Sarai remains a ghost for the rest of her days!
