Wicked King by Holly Black

Before reading Cruel Prince by her, I had never read a Holly Black book. Now, I'm hooked. I absolutely loved loved LOVED! this series so far. In Wicked King, we see Jude's ambition and strength falter as people she thought she could trust totally betray her.

Her own twin sister Taryn is the first one to do so with her relationship with Locke, but she takes that betrayal even further by partnering with their "step" father who kidnapped them as young girls. I have to be honest with you. I never liked Taryn, like not even a little. I thought she was a pushover and weak in comparison to Jude's character. Now, I don't see her as weak anymore, but I do see her as slimy and willing to do anything as long as it means that she doesn't get hurt. (As a side note: I did read the Lost Sisters, which is a novella that explains Taryn's side of things. Since I don't like her character, I found the novella to be a waste of two hours of my day. It made Taryn more annoying to me I think).

The other betrayal that I actually didn't see coming at all, was Ghost's betrayal. He works with Cardan's own brother in an attempt to see him overthrown. Because of how closely he works with Jude, this betrayal hit me harder than Taryn's (and yes, I do realize she's Jude's own sister, but seriously!). He is the one who taught her to fight and who taught her how to blend in and I really saw him as a friend of hers until he betrayed her and disappeared. I do have a feeling, though, that he will make an appearance again.

The other thing I wanted to mention that I loved about this book was the LOVE/HATE relationship between Jude and Cardan. They so badly want to hate each other because of the circumstances that they are in, but I think the back and forth/will they or won't they of their whole relationship and every interaction is what makes it interesting. Cardan's betrayal at the very end makes their relationship even more confusing, because I can't decide if he did what he did because he hates Jude, or because he loves her.
