Smileygirl's Adult Corner: The Penwich School for Virtuous Girls Trilogy by Sophie Jordan

When I'm in a reading rut, I like to read historical romance. Actually, I like to read historical romance pretty much anytime. And right now, between Shatter Me books, I decided that was a good choice. They're light and fluffy and for the most part sweet.

Funny story: My friend, who is not an avid romance reader and just occassionally dabbles, approached me the other day because she read an article about romance books (we are both librarians and yes, that means reading about books). She did not know that a book cannot be considered romance unless it has a HEA. All romance books have a Happily Ever After. And that's why I love them.

Now, I get that life is not full of HEAs. I know that there are things that happen in life that just totally suck and that's where my love of romance novels comes in. They can take a sucky mood and turn it around by making you feel all warm and cozy.

That's what this series has done. Sophie Jordan's Penwich School for Virtuous Girls trilogy has three different women that it follows. All of them had attended this school, which from all outward appearances was a wonderful place for a young girl to go if she needed to learn a trade or just needed a place because she had no family left. All three of the characters had a horrific experience at this school and also come from backgrounds that are not considered stellar. All three characters get the HEA they most definitely deserve.

Fallon, is a young woman who is exceptionally tall, even for a man. She takes on a position with a notorious rake (who also happens to be a duke), but she disguises herself as a man to get away from the lecherous eyes of the men she had worked for before as a woman. Sins of a Wicked Duke, book one in the series, is her story.

Evie's family has always kind of cast her aside. It was her half sister Evangeline who was supposed to save them from poverty. When a decision her sister makes could possibly cast them all out into the streets and have society shunning them, Evie steps in to save the day. She does not expect a blast from the past to step in and mess things up for her, though. In Scandal They Wed, is book two of the series and her story.

Marguerite is an end of life nurse who helps people in their final days. When one of her patients calls on a psychic to find out what lies ahead for her, Marguerite gets a surprise of her own. In an effort to live her life to the fullest, she sets out to do things that most porper ladies would probably turn their noses up at. Wicked Nights with a Lover, is the third and final book in this series and is her story.

Now, a disclaimer: I could not tell you if these books are historically accurate. They are FICTION. Meaning that they are not true stories. Admittedly, there are things that happen in these books that I know would not have actually happened during this time period, but I still enjoyed reading this book because again, it is FICTION.

I will warn that these books contain adult content, so 18+ is preferred when reading them.
