I want to start off by saying that I love this woman. Gail Carriger, if you ever read this, I love you. I love your writing. I love your instagram posts. I love your fashion sense. I just. I love it all.
This book is book number three of the Custard Protocol series. Instead of being told from the point of view of Prudence, we get to hear from Prim and Percy! Prim and Percy are best friends with Prudence, who is the main point of view in the first two books. Their mother happens to be a vampire queen based in London and they are, as far as they know, two of the only living relatives of a vampire queen. Both of them, having been raised in proper society, seem to have that proprietary sense about them.
Prim is constantly taking care of the others aboard the Spotted Custard. She makes sure they're fed and clothed properly. She makes sure that they are eating as healthy as possible. She tends to injuries and also makes sure that supplies aboard the ship are taken care of for when they have guests as well. She's the one who sets up proper tea settings and makes sure the dining room gets used properly.
Percy is the intellectual and has proven in the first two books that he's in it for the recognition. Although this book does show a slight change in some of what he has previously done and shows that he is a little more laid back. He is still constantly thinking of how to spin things in order to get himself published, but his mannerisms toward certain relationships that begin aboard the ship seems very nonchalant for someone who grew up in Victorian London.
The adventure in this book starts off pretty much right away with Prim getting stuck in Singapore when her ship leaves her behind. The adventure from there takes them to Peru where they discover a new vamipre.... a fat sucking vampire. Their goal? To move said vampire to another location. The location they choose? Western United States, where people pay good money nowadays to have the fat sucked out of them. The comical mistakes and twists and turns that take them to Peru and on will have you laughing and at the edge of your seat. I won't give anything more away because it really is something you need to experience yourself.
Carriger's characters in all of her books have always made me laugh and she always makes them quirky in one way or another. She's also always been a friend to the LGBT community and included them in her books. Her storytelling techniques are phenomenal and her sense of humor shines throughout in her writing.
