Glass Houses (Morganville Vampire #1)

In November of 2020 (the year that lasted 78,000,000 days), Rachel Caine lost her fight with cancer. I was already pretty depressed at the time and this just made me more so when I found out. So, in her honor, I am rereading one of my favorite series by her.

Morganville is not like any other college town. Sure, it is overrun by the normal stereotypical college student. But, Morganville also happens to be overrun by other things. There is a reason they are told to be inside before dark.

Claire Danvers is not your average college student. She's wicked smart and also... 16. This means that she is fresh meat for the mean girls who attend her school. After being thrown down a set of stairs, she seeks refuge somewhere other than the dorms. She find Michael, Eve, and Shane and the rest is history.... Kinda

Moving in with them means finding out secrets, though. Claire learns that the things that go bump in the night may not just be stories. After a few run ins with the vampires of Morganville (yup, I said vampires) Claire begins working on a plan to help her housemates.

Alright, so Claire is a really smart individual, but she is also really young and sheltered. In this first book in ther series, you really see that. While she is used to being ridiculed for her intelligence, you can tell she really doesn't expect Monica Morell (think Regina George but violent; really, really violent) to take things as far as she does. This is what leads her to seek refuge elsewhere.

She answers an ad. I feel like a lot of my favorite shows and books start with someone answering an ad (umm... hello! New Girl!). Where she meets Eve, Shane, and Michael. They know she's not eighteen and that keeps them from wanting to have her move in, but after seeing first hand what Monica and her cronies (because honestly there is no better word for them) are trying to do to Claire, they give it a trial period.

So, in this first book you meet a lot of the characters that are going to be important throughout the series. There is one character you won't meet yet, but this book is just giving us the basis for the rest of the series. You will also meet Amelie (the town founder), Oliver (the wannabe founder and guy who is totally jealous of Amelie), the Morell family (town royalty because daddy is the the mayor), and at the very end you will meet Shane's dad Frank (who is the biggest wildcard every). In some form or another these people will show up throughout the series.

I feel like this first book is really to show the reader just how dangerous and weird Morganville is. The regular rules here don't apply. Humans are not the top of the food chain (or pyramid or however you look at it). You get some pretty scary action, but honestly, the more you get into the series, the better that action is.

These books are fast reads. The series may be 15 books long, but it doesn't feel that way when you are fully immersed. They go by quick.

I'll continue my reread periodically with this series, so you will see it again. For now, I hope you decide to pick it up and try it yourself.

Happy Reading!
