Picture Books about Grandparents

Growing up, I remember my Opa stopping at our house to pick one of us kids up to go with him to the grocery store. We only lived down the road and he could be a little forgetful. These two beautifully written books hit me in that soft spot in my heart that always remembers those trips with him. Even though eh sometimes forgot my name or forgot where we were supposed to be going that day. Here are a few reasons why I loved these books.

  • Both books feature grandparents and the important relationships they have with their grandchildren
  • Both books feature grandparents that have dementia. I feel like this isn't a topic that is really discussed in picture books. Growing up having had a grandparent that had dementia, this was something wonderful to see.
  • I loved that each child had a different view on how to handle it. In Finding Grandma's Memories, the little girl helps her grandmother make important notes on the furniture and cupboard doors. In The Tide, the little girl gives her grandfather a great big hug and tells him that she loves him.
  • Both books show the frustration that each child feels when having to deal with this, but they also show that it is okay to feel this way because it doesn't mean you love your grandparent any less.
  • I really loved both of these books as they brought back memories of my own grandfather who had dementia. They struck a chord with me and I hope you all get a chance to read them as well.

Happy Reading!
